From slip to insight in seconds
What actually happens when you photograph a receipt in Breadwinner: from the camera to the shelf-price comparison, in plain language.
You photograph a slip. A few seconds later, your purchase is a set of numbers you can actually use. Here is what happens in between, without the machine-learning jargon.
What happens when you scan
When you scan a receipt, this is the sequence:
- Upload. The photo goes to our servers and is stored securely, linked only to your account.
- Reading. The text on the slip is converted into raw lines: item names, quantities and prices in Pula.
- Matching. Each line is matched against a catalogue of items seen across Botswana, so that "MAIZ MEAL 12.5" and "Maize meal 12.5kg" are understood as the same product.
- Totals. The slip total, date, store and payment method are extracted and checked against what you paid.
What we get right, and when we ask you to check
Receipt printing is messy: faded ink, folded paper, torn edges. Our reader is good, but it is not perfect, and it does not pretend to be:
- If the app is not confident about a line, it flags it and asks you to confirm the price or the item.
- If a receipt you upload matches one you already have, it is flagged as a duplicate. Duplicates never enter your totals, and they never enter any aggregate.
- You can edit any line. A correction to an item name applies going forward, so the same product is not re-corrected every week.
What we do with your data
Your receipts belong to you. Two separate things happen to them:
- Your insights come from your own receipts only: totals, categories, most-purchased items and trends.
- Market-wide insight is different, and optional. Only if you have opted in are your receipts included in anonymised, aggregated statistics, for example what a basket of staples costs across stores. No individual basket is ever identifiable, and nothing is attributed to a named user.
You can change your permissions at any time in Settings, and export or delete your data.
What you see first
The first screen is built around one question: where did the money go this month?
- Monthly totals and spend by category, all editable to fit your household.
- Most purchased items, with the price you last paid.
- A basket comparison against what other shoppers pay, if you are on Premium.
What to do with it
The insight is only worth what you do with it. The habit that works is small: scan every slip for one month, then open the dashboard once a week. Ten minutes a week is enough to spot the store or the item that is quietly costing you more.
Check your own slips
Breadwinner reads any receipt and shows what you actually pay, item by item. Free to start: 10 slips a month, no card required.
