Help & FAQ
How Breadwinner works, what the numbers mean, and what to do when something looks wrong. Anything you cannot find here, report to us and it gets answered.
Getting started
What Breadwinner is, and what it costs.
What does Breadwinner actually do?
It reads the receipts you already get, from any Botswana store, and turns them into a clear picture of what you spend and where you could spend less. You photograph a slip, it reads the items and prices, and your dashboard shows the total, the categories and how that store compares with others.
Which receipts can I upload?
Any of them. Supermarkets, filling stations, restaurants, takeaways, fast food, chemists, hardware stores. Breadwinner is not only for groceries, and the spending breakdown has categories for fuel, eating out, pharmacy and airtime so those slips land somewhere sensible.
Is it free?
The free plan gives you 10 receipt uploads a month and 7 days of spending history. Premium is P29 a month or P249 a year, and gives you unlimited uploads and 90 days of history. Nothing is required to try the free plan, and there is no charge for keeping an account.
What phone number should I use?
Any Botswana number, written however you like. 71 234 567, +267 71 234 567 and 267 71234567 are all understood and stored the same way, so you can type it the way you would say it.
Why do I have to confirm my email or phone?
It is how we know the account is yours. You choose whether the code comes by email or SMS, and it only has to be done once. If a code goes missing you can send another, up to three times in fifteen minutes.
Uploading receipts
Photos, limits, duplicates and fixes.
How do I get the best result from a photo?
Lay the slip flat, fill the frame, and avoid a shadow across it. Thermal slips fade, so a photo taken in daylight reads far better than one in a dim shop. You do not need to crop it, and the whole slip is better than a close-up of part of it.
Why can't I upload more than 10 receipts?
The free plan covers 10 receipts a calendar month. After that, bonus uploads are used if you have any, and Premium removes the limit entirely. Bonus uploads come from credits an admin can issue, or from spending points on the Rewards tab - they are consumed after your free allowance.
Why was my receipt flagged as a duplicate?
Because we already hold that receipt, and counting it twice would overstate your spending. If the same image is uploaded again, or the details match a receipt you already have - the same document number, the same printed time or the same card - it is not added again, and you will see it flagged as a duplicate. If it is a genuinely different purchase, or a shared household phone, report an issue and a person will sort it out for you.
What does "needs a check" mean?
It means we read the slip but were not confident about part of it - a faded line, an unclear price, or the items not quite adding up to the total. The receipt is saved as pending, you are asked to look at it, and nothing from it is counted in your insights until it is right. You can edit any line, and your corrections stick.
Can I fix something you read wrong?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Correcting the name, price or category of an item applies to that product from then on, so the same thing is not re-corrected every week. Corrections also improve what the platform learns about prices generally.
Do you keep the photo of my receipt?
No. The image is read once, at the moment you upload it, and then discarded. What is kept is the information extracted from it - the store, date, items and prices - never the picture itself.
Your spending
What the cards and figures mean.
What is the "Spending by Category" card showing me?
It groups everything you bought into a fixed set of categories and adds the money up, so the rows reconcile with your receipts rather than floating free. It is a spending breakdown you can trust, not a guess: every item is placed somewhere, and the totals add up to what you actually spent.
What is the "Other" category?
It is the honest bucket: things that genuinely do not fit a category we have. If something lands there that should not, correct it once and the same product will go to the right place next time.
What counts as a "trip"?
One receipt that included that category. So three separate shops that each included fuel are three trips, however many fuel lines were on them. The item count next to it is the number of individual things you bought.
Why do Spend and Share order lists the same way?
Because a share is just that item's spend divided by the same total, so the ranking has to match. They are offered separately because they answer different questions - how much, against how much of the whole - not because the order will differ.
Why can I only see 7 days of history?
The free plan looks back 7 days; Premium looks back 90. Your receipts are never deleted either way - the longer view is simply unlocked by Premium.
Points & rewards
Earning, limits, expiry and spending them.
How do I earn points?
You get 50 points for your first receipt and 10 for each one after that. Uploading in consecutive weeks builds a streak: +20 at 2 weeks, +50 at 4 weeks, +100 at 8 weeks. Referring someone earns 50 when they sign up and 25 when they upload their first receipt.
Is there a limit to how many points I can earn?
Yes - points from receipts stop at 200 in a calendar month, and reset on the 1st. Further receipts still count towards your streak, they just stop adding points. Streak and referral points are not capped.
Do points expire?
Points stay valid for 12 months after your last receipt upload. Every upload resets the clock, and we warn you before a balance lapses. If nothing is uploaded for 12 months, the balance is removed from your account.
What can I spend points on?
Extra receipt uploads and Premium time. The current rewards and exactly what each one costs are on your Points page under Rewards, where the cost is shown again before you confirm - so nothing is spent without you seeing the price.
My receipt uploaded but I did not get points. Why?
Three reasons, in order of likelihood: the monthly ceiling has been reached, the receipt is pending a check rather than confirmed, or the receipt was flagged as a duplicate and not added. A receipt only earns once it is counted.
I redeemed points by mistake. Can it be undone?
Yes. Points can be returned and the benefit reversed from the admin side. Report an issue saying what you redeemed and when, and it will be looked at. Anything already used - uploads already spent, Premium days already enjoyed - cannot be recovered, and you will be told exactly what happened.
Premium & payments
Upgrading, paying and cancelling.
How do I upgrade to Premium?
Premium is P29 a month or P249 a year. You send the payment by EFT or Orange Money and submit the reference in the app; it is checked and activated, which keeps things simple while the payment side grows. You will be told in the app and by email the moment it is active.
What does Premium actually unlock?
Unlimited receipt uploads, 90 days of spending history instead of 7, basket comparison between stores, category drill-down down to individual items, and Smart Savings alerts.
Can I cancel? What happens to my data?
You can cancel at any time. Premium runs to the end of the period you paid for and then returns to the free plan. Nothing is deleted - your receipts, history and points all stay exactly where they are.
My Premium expired. Have I lost anything?
Nothing is lost. Everything you uploaded is still there; the free plan simply looks back 7 days instead of 90, and the upload limit applies again. Renewing restores the longer view immediately.
Privacy & your data
What we keep, and what we never do.
Do you sell my data?
No. Breadwinner does not sell personal information, and receipt processing runs on paid business-tier AI services where your inputs are not used to train the provider's models. Anything shared as anonymised price data happens only if you gave explicit consent, and never with your name attached.
What exactly do you keep?
The information read from your receipts (store, date, items, prices, totals), your account details, your points and rewards history, and basic usage data. Not the receipt images. Your optional profile details are kept only because you chose to give them, and can be cleared at any time.
Can I get my data out, or delete my account?
Yes to both, from Settings. Export gives you a JSON file with your account details, receipts and points history. Deleting removes your account and its data. Neither needs a support request.
Will other people see my name?
Only if you choose. Leaderboard visibility is off by default - you are not listed at all until you opt in, and when you do you can set an alias, which is what others see. Without an alias, only your initials are shown.
Account & help
Signing in, changing details, reaching a human.
My verification code never arrived. What now?
Send another from the verification screen - up to three times in fifteen minutes. SMS can take a minute or two on a busy network, and a code that arrives late may have been replaced by a newer one, so always use the most recent message. If nothing arrives at all, check the number in Settings matches the phone in your hand.
How do I change my email or phone number?
In Settings, under Security. Changing either asks for a code to confirm it is you, and the new detail is only used once confirmed. You can clear your phone number entirely if you would rather be reached by email.
Something is wrong. How do I tell you?
Use "Report an issue" in Settings under Help & Support and it goes straight to us with the details attached, which is much faster than describing it from memory. If you would rather email, support@breadwinner.bw reaches the same people.
Still stuck?
A person reads every report, and it arrives with the details already attached, so you do not have to explain from memory.
Or email support@breadwinner.bw and it reaches the same people.
