Why the same item costs different prices in different shops
An identical 2 kg bag of rice can carry three different shelf prices in one city. Here is what drives the gap, and how to check what you actually pay.
Pick up a 2 kg bag of rice at three different shops in Gaborone and you may find three different prices for the very same product. Nobody is breaking the law, and nobody is necessarily being unfair. The gap has a structure, and once you can see it, you can shop around it.
The anatomy of the gap
Four forces explain most of the difference:
- What the shop paid. Bulk buying, payment terms and supplier deals differ from shop to shop.
- What the shop costs to run. Rent per square metre, staff, refrigeration and security all land in the price.
- What the shop is trying to be. A convenience store charges for convenience; a large store charges less per item to win the weekly shop.
- When you buy. Promotions, clearance and stock rotation move prices week by week.
The promotion trap
A promoted price is not automatically the best price. A "special" can still be higher than the everyday price at the shop down the road, because the special was cut from that shop's own base price, not from the best price in town. The only way to know is to compare against a price you observed yourself, recently.
Same chain, different store
Even inside one chain, prices can vary by store format and location. Your till slip shows which store you paid. Breadwinner groups your items by product, so a price you paid at one branch can be compared against prices seen at others.
How to check your own basket
A five-minute habit once a month is enough:
- Keep your slips (or scan them) for one month.
- Pick your ten most-bought items and note what you paid for each.
- Compare the same ten items next month, and watch the trend, not single weeks.
- When a price jumps, check whether it was the item, the shop, or a promotion ending.
Where Breadwinner fits
Every receipt you scan builds your own price history, and, if you opt in, a shared, anonymised picture of what things cost across Botswana. The next time someone changes a shelf price, you will know, because you were measuring.
Check your own slips
Breadwinner reads any receipt and shows what you actually pay, item by item. Free to start: 10 slips a month, no card required.
